Replacing Your PTAC Units? Upgrade for Better Energy Efficiency and Tenant Comfort
Packaged terminal air conditioners (PTACs) are a fixture in apartments, hotels, and commercial high-rise buildings in New York, New Jersey, and other urban areas. They’re also typically the largest energy consumers in a building.
Working together, ETS, Lowe’s, and Electrolux have developed a new generation of PTACs that is much more energy efficient. Unlike their predecessors, these PTACs can even be scheduled and controlled via a smartphone app — from anywhere in the building.
As part of a pilot program, these next-gen PTACs have been installed in several high-rise buildings in New Jersey. They also have been integrated into Lowes’ Iris smart home system, which can connect the common area PTACs within the building to empower building staff to schedule and monitor PTACs from their mobile devices.

A new pilot program will let managers and residents remotely monitor and control heating and cooling units.
In the two months since the pilot program started, program participants report that the next-gen PTACs are using less energy. This was expected since the units utilize newer, more efficient technology. Plus, with the ability to easily schedule and control the units, staff and tenants can run them only when they’re needed, which saves energy.
One benefit that was unexpected is that the next-gen PTACs are significantly quieter than their predecessors. The tenants no longer have to contend with hissing, clunking, and other mysterious sounds coming from the units.
A golden opportunity for building owners
As you plan your regularly scheduled equipment upgrades for this year, it may be a good time to swap out older, energy-hogging, loud PTACs for next-gen PTACs. You’ll empower your tenants and maintenance staff to have more control over their energy usage. And they can help you reduce your carbon footprint and reach any goals you might have through programs such as the Carbon Challenge.
ETS is on the leading edge of wireless PTAC technology. We can answer your PTAC questions and develop a customized energy costs savings plan that incorporates next-gen PTACs and other energy savings technologies to cut your buildings’ energy costs and boost your net operating income (NOI).
